This article felt very relevant to the discussions on AI and critical theory I had in my media theory class. Having read the critiques of Langdon Winner and the works by Phil Agre, the conversation around who controls the very functional and clinical approach to technology advancement is an issue I try to address through my creative practices. That is why Krueger’s approach in describing his projects gave me some powerful vocabulary to work with.
Technology should not be some mystical black box but rather evolve with humans. The way Krueger set up the project METAPLAY, by invoking the participants’ curiosity and triggering interesting reactions should be very much at the heart of technological inventions. I remember reading a critique about how our interactions with the digital have been limited to a few manipulations of the fingers, dictated by creators in a lab. When we explore an unknown world, we employ a rich array of human senses and capabilities, complex movements, and reactions that need to be incorporated into a new generation of inventions. And this process of discovery is present throughout most of Krueger’s works.
